A classless society would be very hard to create or maintain because it’s human nature to stride to be better that others. The first example that comes to mind is why do people go to school? School is the source of education, this helps people make that up ward mobility. I want a higher paying job and an easer way of life for myself. This would not happen in a classless society because everyone would be paid the same. I would not have the motivation or will to improve myself. This situation has happen in the old Soviet Union, the Communist Party was responsible for keep the people feed and housed. The public was paid the same even though their jobs varied greatly. This eliminated competition and the end result was poor construction and poor services. A prime example of this would be the Chernobyl nuclear accident in the 1980’s. The people in charge of the construction were under paid and lacked the educational skills for building a power plant. This will never happened in the United State, due to competition and the up ward mobility that we stride for. On the other hand, I can think of one system of class stratification that can be detrimental to a society, and that is India’s caste system. It has only been in the recent years, that this system has started to crumble. This is due to India’s recent industralizion of its economy. India’s caste system did not allow people to move up in their social class system. If they were born in a certain social setting they generally stay there, their entire life. This caste system force millions of people into impoverished life styles. The United States is not a perfect society, but it gives the lower class an opportunity to move into a better job and better way of life. In reality, there can never be a classless society because our human nature. Our human nature is to compete and make our selves the best we can be.
