The Positive Perceptions of the Death Penalty

The death sentence should apply to all first-degree murder cases; therefore, this will show that in our society, murder will not be tolerated. First of all, a majority of Americans believe in the biblical term, “eye for an eye,” this allows retribution for the families of the victims. This retribution may not change any thing, but it gives the families closure to the crimes. Secondly, the death sentence prevents other murders from happening. When a killer goes to prison for life, he or she has nothing to lose. What prevents the killer from slaying a guard or jail employee? Thirdly, the execution of an innocent person is very unlikely with the introduction of D.N.A. testing, for it’s now possible to link the criminal to the crime. To execute someone, it should be mandatory for D.N.A. testing; therefore, leaving no doubt in the guilt of the killer. Fourth, some people may think the death penalty is racist because of the unequal amount of black people on death row verses white people. In truth, black people are in a social and economic disadvantage because of the lack of education and lower income. Black people are going to commit more heinous crimes because of their disadvantages. The Supreme Court does not look at race, but only focuses on the homicides that are committed. And fifth, with the death sentence in place, this gives the potential killers some thing to think about before committing the homicides. Murderers will be in fear of losing their own lives. In closing, there are only a few stanch activists that are not in support of the death penalty. In reality, most people do support the death penalty. The death penalty brings justice and closure to the victims and to society.
